Laird Industries
October 2005
In 1992, Elizabeth Laird worked with a local firm to design and manufacture a wearable computer for the United States Army Electronics Command [CECOM] at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. The product facilitated the repair of armored tanks out in the field. That project not only jump-started the parent company, Effective Marketing Group, Inc., it also provided the cornerstone for the early success and achievement of Laird Industries.
Laird Industries is a start-up manufacturing firm, formed January 1, 2003, that builds, assembles and tests electronic and mechanical assemblies for both Federal and Commercial customers. As CEO and founder of Laird Industries, Elizabeth is responsible for all phases of the business including design, development, manufacturing, quality control, and the supervision of an extended staff of experts in electronics hardware, industrial, mechanical, and software engineering.
Laird holds a bachelor's degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and worked previously for Corning, Inc. in Corning NY. In March 2001 she was a nominee for Working Woman Magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year Award. She has presented at the Annual Rochester Quality Conference, "Getting Results" and is the author of Marketing: An Integrative Process (that uses research to guide new and next-generation product development.)
Laird Industries has a proven record of manufacturing electronic and mechanical assemblies to a wide range of quality performance standards. A typical project requires strict adherence to Aerospace Specifications and Standards. Laird Industries is ISO 9001:2000 compliant.
To help meet the rigid requirements of environmental
testing, Laird Industries' equipment includes
environmental test chambers, ultra low temperature freezers, vacuum chambers and ovens with which to conduct temperature, barometric, humidity, fungus, and a wide range of other important tests to ensure that the end product is able to meet the demands of difficult environments.
George Protchenko, Electronics Supervisor, brings to Laird Industries
over 35 years of electronics and design expertise. George is directly responsible for the manufacture of cables, wire harnesses, printed circuit boards, test fixtures, electronic equipment, and testing procedures to military specifications and standards. This work is similar to that which he performed at companies such as Harris and Xerox. In addition to George's electronics experience, he is able to fabricate the mechanical as well as the electrical portions of a project, being equally at home in a machine shop as in an electronics laboratory. His career also includes 15 years as a software test engineer. George is responsible for all phases of electrical assembly and testing at Laird Industries.
SCORE counselors, Harvey Nusbaum and Bob Zimmerman, have been instrumental in developing the accounting and other internally used systems for Laird Industries specific to business in the federal sector.
